Purpose

Central Highlands Chess was created in 2019 by World Chess Federation Master Simon Rutherford. Its objective is to provide specialised chess coaching to schools and students in the Ballarat and Daylesford municipalities. 


Simon also provides private maths tutoring.

Chess Credentials

Master of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Twice represented Australia in international tournaments. Best result was 2nd in the 1991 Asian Under-16 Championship event in Indonesia.

Australian junior champion in a number of different age groups.

4-time Victorian Under-18 champion, first holding the title at the age of 14.

2-time Victorian Under-16 champion.

2-time Victorian Under-14 champion.

Academic Qualifications

Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in Finance (University of Melbourne).

Undergraduate majors in Finance, Economics, Econometrics, and Marketing (University of Melbourne).

Other Accreditations

Simon hold a current Working with Children Check card, and is happy to provide this on request.

Chess Coaching Experience

Simon has taught chess at a large number of schools in Melbourne including Wesley College, Melbourne Grammar School, St Kevin's College, Fitzroy Community School, Balwyn North Primary School, and Mt Waverley Primary School.

Other Teaching Experience

Head Undergraduate Tutor at the University of Melbourne within the Finance and Economics departments.
